Operating and assembly instructions in accordance with the EU Machine Directive

Even if there is only one moving part on your product, there is a high probability that the Directive 2006/42/EC, also known as the “EU Machine Directive”, applies. In Germany, the directive was realized as national law with the German Code on Equipment and Product Safety. The most recent version goes into effect on December 29, 2009, and places additional requirements on the technical documentation of a machine. In addition, it broadens the area of application to “partial machines”.

The directive does place requirements on the contents of the documentation, however leaves a large amount of leeway on how to convey these contents on an individual basis. A clearer picture of which information in which form should be conveyed with instructions does not emerge until there is interaction with other laws and standards, e.g. EN 62 079 for preparing operating instructions.
